They met at a masquerade ball,
Where masks and costumes hid them all.
He was dressed as a pirate king,
She was a fairy with gossamer wings.
They danced and talked, enchanted by each other,
But neither knew the face of their lover.
They only felt the spark and the thrill,
The magic of the night that made time stand still.
They agreed to meet again, at the break of dawn,
By the fountain in the garden, where the roses shone.
They parted with a kiss, and a promise to reveal,
Their true identities, and how they really feel.
But fate had other plans, and a storm began to brew,
The rain and thunder chased away the moon and stars so blue.
He ran to the fountain, hoping she was there,
But all he found was a lonely feather, floating in the air.
He searched and searched, but could not find her,
He wondered if he dreamed her, or if she was a liar.
He felt a pang of sorrow, and a longing in his chest,
He wished he could have seen her, and held her to his breast.
She waited for him, under a sheltering tree,
She hoped he would come soon, and set her heart free.
She saw him running, but he did not see her,
He passed her by, and left her in a blur.
She called his name, but he did not hear,
He was too far away, and the storm was too severe.
She felt a tear of sadness, and a yearning in her soul,
She wished he could have found her, and made her whole.
They never saw each other, after that fateful night,
They only had their memories, and their masks so bright.
They kept them as reminders, of the love they almost had,
And sometimes they would wonder, if they were happy or sad.
